Shadow Cat

I got a fleeting glimpse of him tonight, In and out of shadows, As if he himself, Were just a furtive graceful motion. Gliding through the flowered jungle, Toward the sound of water. And to his midnight rendezvous, With the lovely creature, Who captured his heart so long ago. They are not strays these two. But free spirits, Who choose to live on hospital grounds. And keep their midnight rendezvous, At the fountain by the entrance, Where Veterans come and go all day, But are fast asleep at midnight, When the cats come out to play.

I saw a couple of cats running wild at a rest area on the interstate recently. This poem reminds me of the way they moved. They seemed like the free spirits you describe here. Really nice poem ~Juliane
