Ekphrasis ~ Contest displaying Edvard Munch's 'Separation' sponsored by Dilly Dally

When love is torn asunder and there is nothing left but dissent, a lover's heart will be shattered, mortally wounded and rent. In a relationship that was once held as sacred and eternal, sorrow takes a heavy toll on the one left behind, and infernal flames of grief scorch the lonely heart so that it must dwell, suffering in what seems like the fiery abyss of emotional hell. Forlorn the man when his once-upon-a-time love went astray, and became a wraith without a face. She refused to stay. Dressed in bridal gown, perhaps she seeks a new marriage mate, a man who will please her instead of treating her like a roommate. She looks forward to a brighter future than one she's left behind, wondering why she married him. How could she have been so blind? Could it be there's another side to the separation of two lovers? In death she was buried in a white shroud. Sorrowfully, he hovers. A bouquet of crimson flowers he's brought to leave at her grave but he cannot bear to look at the tomb. Today, he's not that brave. Ghostlike she appears to him, a wispy figure, floating in the mist. He's haunted by memories of the lips he'd passionately kissed.

Lin, you have so beautifully captured the agony front and center in this painting and the sense of numbness in the depiction of the woman, floating away not even looking back! It is truly a depiction of two worlds. Lovely ekphrasis! So happy that this poem of a man emotionally spent has garnered another honor! It is haunting and plaintive! Congratulations on your win and your POTD! Blessings to you!

Writing about the tragedy of lost love seems to be my strong suit, doesn't it, Sam? I'd have preferred to write on happier themes, but c'est la vie. Thank you for seeing what I intended in my lines.

Lin, you have a way of expressing the anguish of shattered love and the haunting memories that persist. "...infernal flames of grief scorch the lonely heart so that it must dwell, suffering in what seems like the fiery abyss of emotional hell." Oh, my! I love "another side" suggested in the last stanza. Congratulations on your Poem of the Day honors and your placement in Dilly Dally’s contest.

Thank you for your insight into a corner of my heart, Mark. All is well with me, but years of heartache and pages of writing about it have lessened, somewhat, the sorrow of lost loves. Your keen eye picks up on what most other poets fail to see and feel.

I'm not usually a fan of abstract paintings, but Munch's always give enough dimension to be understood. Thanks ever so much, Kim.

This rather abstract painting is difficult to be explicated and interpreted. Yet you have done a wonderful job, Lin. Love when broken, leaves both the parties shattered. Whose fault it is yet remains a difficult question. The memories of great times they had together will definitely haunt them. Well done.Congratulations on your POTD

Congratulations on your POTD, Lin. A tragic tale of the pain of lost love. I liked that there was a hint of closure in the afterlife. It drew the pain in my soul back to the surface and brought tears to my eyes. Oh that younger lovers could see their future before speaking those words ... to death due us part. Bill

Hi dear Tom! The man in the painting is overcome with sorrowful emotions and no matter which of my scenarios fit what Munch had in mind, there could be no happy ending for him. Thanks for your fine comments. I am well and have had you on my mind.
