Scary Moments
Was a wild September night in eighteen thirty eight
Grace Darling was at her fathers, lighthouse window
Spotted a wreck on a nearby low rocky island
Woke her father as survivors were in danger
Was too rough for the lifeboat to be launched
So into a fourteen foot row boat called a coble
She and her dad rowed the mile to the wreck
Held it steady whilst father rescued as many as was able
Rowed back to the lighthouse another wild mile
Whilst Grace looked after the survivors on the lighthouse
Her father and three of the rescued rowed back to the boat
Managed to rescue a few more, of the sixty two on board
For this act of bravery Grace Darling received a large reward
But money didn’t stop the tuberculosis disease
that took her life at Just twenty six years old
Buried in a modest grave in Bamburgh in eighteen forty eight
In her honour William Wordsworth wrote
The poem called “Grace Darling”
This was a scary moment for this daring miss
The girl with the windswept hair.
The story of Grace Darling can be read online.
