Rhyme and Refrain
Death, Where Are You
I bet you've met the most amazing people,
popes and queens beneath cathedral steeples,
and dust-foot maids in the hills among the petalled sepals.
Death, where are you now?
I bet you've been around the world,
farther than the compass sent so many sails unfurled,
vikings ships, and ships from Qin, Polynesians with their curls.
Death, where are you now?
I bet you've heard so many marvelous last words,
jokes and fears, confessions, secrets soon to be immured.
There's nothing new to you, where all our crossroads blur.
Death, where are you now?
I bet you're not afraid of battle; I bet you know
what comes after the harsh light, where we go.
I bet you hold no grudges, and forgive both high and low.
Death, where are you now?
