Since trust is a mask that has nothing behind it And hope is not found where mortal can find it; Since love's looking glass can break in a minute Eracing the face that the soul has cast in it; Why would we care for winters or springs The scent of the blossom or the sweep of the wings? Since all is for naught with good or for ill Making folly an illusion to torment us still. Since all the unrest and eager endeavor Is nothing but vanity now and forever; A heart found bleeding to sustain the ideal Is nothing but pride with nothing that’s real. Should a man be brave but not know the strife With a reason to have and hold on to life? Or die by the sword but not know the dare Willing to be and be willing to bear? Man knows now how fate may be cheated How by being brave may the deeds be defeated; Killing the longing that lies in your bosom Desires not the fruit when you see the blossom; Wish not for the flower when you think of the bud Kill all the mavericks that cry for your blood. Hopes unfulfilled are an illegal delight For these are the dreams of a perfidious night; So let me imagine an infinite peace Felt without joy but a feeling of release; Something by which an immortal decree Is as like nothing as something can be.

This sort of reminds me of my poem The Butterfly. When the concept of immortality is stripped away, and then the hope for personal wealth along with it, and once we erase the fallacies of the Cinderella syndrome, until all that's left to ponder of our existence is the truth of the here and now, we are confronted with two inescapable realities.....an inner peace and the existence of God. Everything else is only a smoke screen designed to obscure these two universal truths. I had to read your poem several times to understand it, the meaning is a little obscure but deep nonetheless.

pretty heavy stuff Elizabeth! Had to read it several times. This one of yours is filled to the brim. A whole different perspective I think. About as existential as I have ever seen in poetry. Very well done. I think a masterful piece. Impressive in it's clarity for the depth of it all. How do you do that? very impressive. Second verse my fav. Thanks for your poetic comment, -Bob

Pessimistic as a pistol, I'm still smiling at daver's clever phrase. Bang, bang! The truth is we're all just trying to stay alive. Just long enough for or souls to survive.

Super piece, Liz. Really lays it on the line. Pessimistic as a pistol. Many truths here. I like your ending. That infinite peace is what most crave after a certain amount of life's-kicking-around. How often is everyone frightened by these "immortal decrees" Love, daver

I can only dream of achieving this level of command in poetry Liz. Your lines express much deeper meanings, I actually had to go through it twice to get the message really being delivered here. A BRILLIANT WRITE!:)

Wonderful deep write as usual lovely Lady Elizabeth...with love...old Jack......I don't come here much anymore I see the pattern of the favorites, easy to predict who will win the contests, and who's favorites are who's. I am definetly not in that circle. There are many wonderful writers here who are overlooked because they are not of the who's who's...!

This sure is a well-thought out poem, Elizabeth and you've touched on some very valid and interesting points here... sometimes nothing indeed can be what they seem to be, all an illusion...thought provoking poem and very well written! Thank you very much for all your encouraging comments in my poems, I am just so touched that you've been passing by..haven't been here lately. Seeing your comments make me smile, thank you!! :D
