* Up until the summer of 1999, I only knew of the words "Jesus." I knew what was being taught in church. As I sat in the pew, I heard the Bible being read. Words with empty meanings, blowing in the wind. I used to listen to the pastor read from the Bible every Sunday. Prayer and an alter call conclude the service. Anyone who wishes to confess is welcome to do so. Give Jesus your heart and He will heal you." Even still, none of this mattered. It was just words. I'd read my Bible because that's what I was taught to do. It was pointless and perplexing. "What is the point?" I'd ask God some nights as I closed the Bible. It was the summer of 1999 and my mother had recently died. My family is from North Carolina's Bible Belt. Their way of life was always centered on "God and Family." I was sitting in church, listening to the preacher read 1 John 1:9. Jesus chose my grieving and tender heart. As He spoke softly to me for the first time, The words from the Bible came to life. "Come unto me, all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Years of hearing the Bible being read are now being spoken. "Come! Repent!! I am the way, the truth, and the life. " I felt the warmth and love of Jesus. It was a peace that surpassed all understanding. I felt a love I never knew as tears filled my eyes. I'm sorry, Lord. I know I'm broken. My soul is bankrupt and my morals corrupt. Jesus, you know my heart and everything I've done. Forgive me, Lord. I know I'm a sinner. I was born this way. Heal my spirit. Tears ran down my cheeks as I felt this heavy burden. I've been carrying around ; now lifting. There was a total internal peace that came over me. A sinner who came to church that day left with a new heart. I understand what it means to "be born again". God has restored my spirit, and I can communicate with Him. My life has changed with each passing day. My hunger for the Bible grows stronger. I want to know everything there is to know about God. I have the Holy Spirit to assist me in comprehending. I'll never forget the moment I dedicated my heart to Jesus. That was the beginning of my new life. Life will always be filled with trials and tribulations. "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee," Jesus promised. Written on 1/26/ 2022 *** 1st. *** Written for: Repent and Believe Contest Sponsored by: Regina McIntosh Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Philippians 4: 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. John 3: 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born. 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. Hebrew 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. ROMANS 10: 17 SO THEN FAITH COMETH BY HEARING, AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD.

I love this Debra and I can relate to it very much. I was also like you going through the motions but not really understanding till I had a tragedy in my own life, God brought me back to him. That is what he does through his unending love for us. Be blessed for writing this moving truth of your profound realization...

Paulette Thanks for your comment. You are so right. My favorite passage in the Bible that I have memorized is Hebrews 11:6. You can't please God unless you approach Him in faith. Hugs and blessings Debra

Debra, this is a wonderful testimony of the goodness of God as He drew you to Himself using Scriptures, life experiences, powerful preaching, and the Holy Spirit bringing light to the confusion. I loved all your Scripture passages, especially the Philippians one which I pray or quote frequently, "the peace that passes all understanding". Congratulations for your win, and thank you for this edifying poem. "Let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the day approaching." Heb 10:25.

Thank you for your kind words, John. I had a pastor that was the best teacher of the Bible I ever had. He was a Bible school teacher as he taught at Marrietta Bible College in Ohio. He would teach us the same way he taught his own college classes. His knowledge of the Bible was incredible. One thing he taught us is that we are to be soul winners and we should always share our testimony. This is the best encouragement we have to lead people to Christ. That's why I chose to put it in a poem. If it brings one person to Christ, then it was worth it. God bless you for your comment. Your sister in Christ. ~ Debra

There is the hovering of the Spirit. God indeed reveals His son as we prepare our hearts to receive. I think of conversion as us being the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well and our eyes are open to the truth revealed by God. Be blessed, dear one!

Kim, you may be right about the hovering of the Spirit. He may be searching our hearts to see if we are ready to repent. Thank you, Kim, my Christian sister.

I understood what Jesus was about, it was the cry, and it was about something I was powerless over. I think I felt the mercy that Jesus must have felt for us. Great story! Congratulations Debra!

I think some of the reading of the bible stems from the old english in the KJV; I know I used to get tired of having to look up words that weren't in our modern dictinary. Still, I learned a little about old english. But when you're a kid, it makes the understanding difficult. This really took me back.
