Remembrance
REMEMBRANCE
Behind a bright flint wall
Limestone epaulettes neatly cut
Hidden from passing eyes is
Lijssenthoek.
In pristine rows of white they stand erect,
Shoulder to shoulder
Eyes right!
In military ranks
Names and regiments neatly etched in stone
But not for all.
In mixed pieces they lie, perhaps
Heartless in a shattered shell.
Gently I tread the manicured grass
A carpet to cover what was once
Crimson mud.
Dark craters filled with the blood
Of short lived lives
Good and bad
Husband or son
So many here and yet so few
Of all that died
For what?
Peace?
