Reading Beyond the Obvious

I read the same poem for several days I kept seeing it in different ways Even though the words they never changed Somehow my thoughts became rearranged The first time reading, it made me smile My thoughts were confused after a while Second time I searched for new meaning Like a farmer in a field gleaning I was confused, by her metaphor She used a gate instead of a door The third day I thought I'd try again Her words, were saturated in pain On the fourth day things became intense Why did it take, so long to make sense? Words may seem simple at a first glance With re-reading they can start to dance Each mood I have, helps me to see more Subtle differences in metaphor

The best ones take several reads, don't they? Sometimes it's years later before you have the experience and knowledge to get the deeper layers. Excellent thoughts, mon ami.

I agree with you here Richard, very much. Is true that most people just read a poem through very quickly without absorbing the content and missing the meaning. Reminds me of that old maxim, 'I know what Ilike, coz I like what I know', I always read a poem wice and slowly. Time is always limited and I suspect we're as guilty on on here. Nice reminder, well written. Take care, Regards Richard

This is very interesting Rich. It's really crazy how words can do that, eh? The greatest poetry likes to resemble diamonds... many subtle different angles. I like to think of poetry as sometimes having a mind all their own and this one certainly does!
