Thank you, Daver A research comment: The three musicians and dog conjure a bygone period of bohemian life, enjoyed here by Picasso in the guise of a Harlequin flanked by two figures who may represent poet-friends of the artist: Guillaume Apollinaire, who had recently died, and Max Jacob. The patterned flatness of the work is derived from cut-and-pasted paper, and stands in stark contrast to the sculptural monumentality of Picasso’s Three Women at the Spring, also painted in the summer of 1921.

Daver, you mean "The Three Musicians" in which Picasso seduced perception to ignore color, and made the dog the same color as the walls. The Hegel-Marx theory of dialectical materialism (which Picasso espoused) dealt with class issues (and Jesus had used the analogy of the dog in one such situation). Music represents harmony, but the resting worker (dog in the shadow) is a social discord.

Hi Daver, I know that picture. The dog is more like a shadow and don't seem to like the music, no idea why Picasso placed him there in the corner. But I agree, it's a nice painting. I do paint myself but more in a neorealistic pattern. Picasso must have enjoyed clowns as he pictured various. Enjoyed yout Tankas....Gert

Daver, I am not a fan of modern art OR the super modern poetry. I prefer the classic paintings before 1900. The style of the realists and the romanticists. But the picture you paint is very interesting. Probably the dog is there becuase dogs are such clowns themselves! Cool poem! Luv, Andrea

Excellent poem, Daver. I looked at the painting on the Internet and could not find the dog's paws. Maybe my eyes are bad? I'm not a big fan of Picasso, but your poem is lively and colorful. Wish I could find that dog's paws. Love, Carolyn
