Primal Needs
When I was younger
a team of myself and twelve others
spent time in a very harsh environment
an environment not suited for human habitation
it very quickly became abundantly clear
that our basic needs are paramount
shelter from the elements
and a full belly
at the very least
a belly that does not rumble with the emptiness of hunger
to be warm and safe
and to have a belly content enough not to rumble
are primal needs
unquestioned needs
having them
bestows upon us
the uplifting pride of accomplishment
and a feeling that leans towards contentment
that their lack vehemently denies us
they satisfy something vital
something fundamental to our very being
something that resides deep within us
many of us have these basic needs
we have shelter and we have food
but take both for granted
we never stop to appreciate
what a truly wonderful thing it is
to be warm and safe
and possessed of a belly
that does not rumble with the emptiness of hunger
so we strive for all manner of things
in a constant quest to satisfy
an essential part of who we are
that which is fundamental to our very being
endlessly looking
constantly striving
for something
that we already possess.
