Popocatepetl
With ten cocoa beans, he could buy her, one day…
But her feelings were so secret, and so temperate:
He was indeed desperate waiting to find the way
In the sacred forest, where they have a secret date:
With ten cocoa beans, one could buy a woman,
Obsessive thought, like close prisoner in a grave;
Indeed, such a beauty could not be really human.
One hundred cocoa beans was the price of a slave:
When he was caught at the mountains pass, the volcanoes
Were asking for sacrifice, especially the old Ixtaccíhuatl;
Beyond the prickly pears, the gods stopped their long canoes:
At Tenochtitlan, they would drink Xocoatl, after the battle.
Popocatepetl had a necklace of one hundred cocoa beans,
And a lot of slaves shattering the same forgotten dreams.
