Note:The Pohutukawa is a common tree in the north Island of New Zealand. It lines the streets and grows in gardens and on hillsides, singly and in clumps. In the weeks either side of Christmas it is covered in pompom like kahika blooms ranging from scarlet to blood red and then sheds fine needles to line the gutters and cover the pavements red.

Your blood-brushed hills With tangled scarlet trees That line the roadside miles, Present kahika crowns Towards the summer skies From where You grace us With your smiles, And grants to us this favour: The glory of Your Christmas tree, The peerless Pohutukawa.

Hello Darlene Thus was my very first poem! Inspired by a trip to NewZealand where the North Island in particular shows off these magnificent trees with their red pom pom flowers around Christmas. Sadly we don't have them in London and certainly not in my garden, though I do have a magnificent Wisteria that is a close rival. Thanks for you comment!

Hello Bob Kimmerling, so nice to meet you. The Putakawa tree sounds lovely. You are lucky to have a beautiful tree like that. Enjoy your evening my friend.
