Sometimes I wonder… As I read the past poets, great writers, With offerings of words Who will ever be, so sweet - they shall not fade. But, then I read the current poetry – Modern thoughts with a modern muse, And I’m sensing that, if we should meet with one, Who wrote the best, the greatest, the insightful, We might be sadly pressed… to give these authors, Our recompense, Though we never would say the words, We lack the same reverence, the same awe, Admiration for those whose gifts… Aspire to offer our hearts the greatest genius. Would we recognize, today… The wonder of poetry that can honestly say… It will be gathered and assembled, Collected for the day – when our poetic successors Read the words that can still – Still a heart, warm a soul, and bring to readers… Joys untold, wonders so bold, lingering praise, For poets who reign in eternal grace, Plodding away, in complete assurance, that their words… Shall go down in history, forever and always – Poetic legends, notorious for their breathless pens, Their tender embrace – the amazing way they portray… Lovely lights beyond the poet’s persuasion.

I think it's a time and a place. Put those famous poets in today's world, and I've got a feeling their work might not make it. A bit like us writing of the past.

I see your point and agree with your contentions Gina. Modern poets are so gifted, I always feel it when i read poems of some of our poets on poetry soup! But I wonder will their names go down History as that of the great legends of old. Loved reading your poem.

Modern poetry, whether better or worse is debatable. But it is different.

I have to be honest Gina, I do believe a lot of the poets from the past are so over rated and many became famous after death.. I think there are poets today who are more talented... it seems meter was important in the old times, is it still important today? To some, but not all.. poetry has changed a little over times, but the concept still remains the same, write about what you feel and what you see... loved your poem..

I think many here would be idolized if given their due as were poets of old. We all were born into the wrong century. Great write, dear Gina

I agree, Gina. Reverence in general is lacking in today's world--folks tend to be irreverent in their dealings with one another, leadership, God, words, art--you name it...would that I could become revered like Frost or Elliot.... :-) smiles and enjoy your day. hugs, Sara

I totally agree with you Regina, if only we had the same reverence that they had to poetry, ministered it like the days of old, we would go down in history with the very best. Which is your favorite poet of old, ? I'm just curious, and what is your fav poem from them ?

It's impossible to choose. I love many, but I suppose I've read more by Emily Dickinson - but, it is impossible to choose only one! Love you.
