Plagiarism At the Soup

I can't believe that he could claim A poem by Edgar Allan Poe, Titled as is, but with his name! That is plagiarism, we know! Wallace Stevens, Stephen Foster, Thomas Moore, Sir Philip Sidney, Famous authors whose works are here- Posted as this guy's poetry! Plagiarists steal written work, And thrive with inadequacy. Their minds are warped, there evil lurks, They're crooks, that is seen quite clearly! When someone would post as his own The writings of well-known authors, Then to the whole world he makes known He's a pathetic pretender! Cynthia Buhain-Baello~~~02.27.16 Note: Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work. It is "intellectual property theft" . ---"It’s robbing people of their ideas, inventions, and creative expressions—what’s called intellectual property—everything from trade secrets and proprietary products and parts to movies and music and software." As I read through the many various comments your poem has prompted I find myself in agreement with just about all of them. Adding something to the debate: Words belong to no one person as whatever we write has been written many times before, in one form/language or another, a multitude of times over...And no doubt will be repeated countless times again in the future. My best regards, Cynthia - Cheers! :) john

In short, Cynthia...No, certainly not. Your comments are all so obviously true. Plagiarism cannot not be tolerated in any form whatsoever. However you have opened a can of worms up here. I was in the main referring to "Inadvertent Plagiarism". A couple of other types of examples: My first poem I published on this site..."August Rains" has had several lines used by another writer in one of his poems. On another occasion a gentleman from the Middle East requested he could translate it into Arabic. On both occasions I agreed to their requests. I very much doubt if either writer accorded me any credit. Plagiarism in itself, is, as you have ably demonstrated, an unworthy thing. But sometimes, like life itself, it can be all shades of grey. My very best regards, Cynthia. :) john

Thank you John Fleming. The person who plagiarized classic literary work as been taken out of poetrysoup. Words belong to no one person, true, but the poems belong to the writer, it is HIS artwork, his intellectual property. A literary work takes time & effort, brain work & skill. No one just comes out with a poem like a burp, he has to work on it & that work can't belong to everybody else -it belongs to him. You're not saying our poems here can be claimed by anybody as written by them, are you? That would be a free-for-all.

An excellent and very important poem highlighting a 'plague' called plagiarism! I have had several of my poems stolen; found some on other sites, and it took up a lot of my time trying to amend things. Since then I am always on the lookout, gets to you! ~ Regards // paul

Thank you for reading and leaving a comment Paul Callus. Yes some people like stealing the work of other writers but just display who they are to the world. It's all a matter of honesty.

He also posted "Love and a Question" by a Robert Frost. I don't know how one expects to take Robert Frost and get away with it! I blocked him this morning.

Typo error - "Morning of Life" by Thomas Moore and "The Plot Against the Giant" by Wallace Stevens. He should have posted the name of the original authors (these poems are classics and on the net, can easily trace who wrote them.)

Thank you Daniel Carter. He posted "A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan Poe" "Magic of Life" by Thomas Moore, "I Dream of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" by Stephen Foster , "My True Love Has My Heart" by Sir Philip Sidney as his own poems, posting his name as the author. When I commented that the poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe, he removed my comment and disabled commenting.

Cynthia, thank you for sharing this information with everyone. Maybe, just maybe the Banaras wall will come tumbling down with a little help from soup friends. And I thank you for your kind remarks visiting my page.

Thank you Pete Yuhas. I am not against him personally, I am against the practice of misrepresenting one's self as the author of these classic poetry and actually disrespecting this site because he had been posting them for a long time, that casts doubt on the site itself. We can quote poetry but must give credit to the REAL author.

Very well written. I have a CD, Crayon, that I put out in 1995. Rendered for free on soundcloud. It is and has been sold all over the world, but not by me. Once it's out there, it's fair game, I guess. I have to be satisfied with the fact people are enjoying it.

Thank you Ricky Kendall. When we mark our work "free to share" we give people permission to use it as they wish. Some do for financial gain without our knowledge. In the US, there are copyright laws on intellectual property - music and poetry, literary work, paintings, digital art, etc. In my country, plagiarism is a crime & can mean a big fine or jail term, plus the disrepute of being called a plagiarist.

Thank you Silent One. That is a more serious crime - "Identity Theft" and you can report it to the FBI. It could also be a start to take over your whole identity and (bank account and credit cards). In my country, plagiarism is a crime.

Unsettling, but true for immature minds not flexing; scared to exercise, but have no qualms about their deeds coming to light. well done my p.s. friend.

I really like what you've written, I so totally agree with you of everything you've said. But I have one question for you about cheating and plagiarism. Is it plagiarism if someone prints a poem of another's poem and just using it to try to write one better or even to use it just for greater inspiration.... Yvonne

Thank you Yvonne De Carlosa - if we post the work of another poet or writer as an example, we should ALWAYS put his or her name as the original author, not our name as the author. Due respect/acknowledgement of another writer's work is needed & required. It is actually a crime to plagiarize. I don't believe a person is so limited in talent & intelligence to not be able to write his own work, insults himself by posting the writing of another person as his own. That is called "intellectual property theft" . "It’s robbing people of their ideas, inventions, and creative expressions—what’s called intellectual property—everything from trade secrets and proprietary products and parts to movies and music and software." One poet in poetrysoup actually posted "A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan Poe" "Magic of Life" by Thomas Moore, "I Dream of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" by Stephen Foster , "My True Love Has My Heart" by Sir Philip Sidney as his own poems, posting his name as the author. His name is Banaras Malik.
