Passages of Golden Ribbons

Not long ago we lived in peace.
Where children played out in the street.
The sounds of guns now fill the night.
As silence fills the streets with fright.

No more can we feel free to roam.
Outside at night away from home.
The crazy man just down the road.
Didn't stop until he shot his load.

I'd say don't worry, what can you do?
But next time maybe me or you.
So bar the door and draw the curtain.
For after dark nothing is certain.

A card of sorrow, a vase of flowers.
For mothers and widows to pass the hours.
To mark the end of time we live in.
These passages of golden ribbons.

P.S. The title and idea came from a Loggins and Messina song titled Golden Ribbons.
It's about war casualty's.

Really see war casualty's in our streets and in a poem too, Robert, I know that was your point, but may we have more serene times!

So stirring Robert, it has everything there to make the reader feel the terror of not having control if he isn't on guard. So it is these days, we just never know. An emotional write for me!

I LOVE how you finished it. Bringing back the longing for the old times. Thanks for the footnote too, Robert. Very helpful. I was thinking it could be a very bad neighborhood, like in a big city! Do you live in England? Thankfully in the US we have never had to endure this kind of scene from wars. At least not in my lifetime!

Keep on, my friend. It blows me away how you can just think up these rhymes to us out of the blue to comment on our poems and now you cannot finish this one. I KNOW you can do it, so I will come back later sometime to see what happened! Luv, Andrea
