Orphan

You chance upon her in the far reaches of the backyard a place you never go.. and there, she trembles in the dark space 'neath the blackthorn shrubs faint mews draw you closer the power of her vulnerability on full blast how helpless she is with eyes newly opened neglected yet beautiful you see the phenomenon of the will to live - her outsized feistiness belying such a petite package born a feral her mother likely lost to the wheels of a car or the jaws of yipping coyotes heard in twilight's fade it will never be known for sure and you wonder if she still wonders if the familiar purr with the soft fur will snuggle her she’s been cold and alone for far too long so you gather her in the hug of your hands and cradle her with your chest curled around her your veins tingle as your blood warms to her fragility for the first time and you decide not to let Nature take its course; instead you sit with her at your hearth to heal the orphan within. I absolutely love the imagery here and flow of your descriptive write that also conveys a message to all, kindness and offering arms and a place for one that you happened to come across; to nurture and provide and safe them from loneliness: you have a very deep and thoughtful heart and that can be evident as you mentioned how their mother can be gone etc::: orphan, cradled and finally welcomed! So well described and delivered. Love this and felt this! And the way you write is truly impeccable

Dear Empress, I am touched so very deeply by the soulful, insightful beauty of your thoughts that bares the glowing empathy in your heart like a hearth bares the light and warmth of a home fire serenely burning. Your thoughtful presence is cherished as is the knowledge that you felt my poetic words. Thank you lovely poetess! Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Engaging and so tenderly written. You really have a soft spot for the furry, four-legged members of the family. You bring to mind a memory of old... my friend and I were walking down a highway late into the night and heard a soft mewing. Through the chain-link fence and beneath a thorny bush was a snow white kitten. It looked very clean so I don't think it was lost long, but we took care of it long enough for the humane society to come take over.

Dear Timothy, thank you for your rich, wonderful comments. I relish your poetic intuition and appreciate the beauty of your empathy - not everyone would take care of a kitten they happened upon. Your heart shines with kindness, my friend. And yes, though I write in many different poetry forms, I love to compose in free verse most of all :) And.. you're welcome, Timothy, if I am detailed and robust when commenting on your works, it's because there is a bounty of substance and artistry for me to delve into; headfirst into your poetic pool of thoughts. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Free verse poetry really seems to suit your style... just naturally flowing. I also want to thank you for your recent comments on my works. Very few people are as detailed and robust as you are when you engage with a poem.

My dear poetry sister, I relish your wonderful visit and your uplifting words. You are in my thoughts often as well, dear Jennifer. Please don't ever worry about not replying sooner rather than later, as the same happens to me many evenings when I finally sit down with PS after a long day. I know just how busy and dizzying life can be.. Our warm words of friendship will always be here to greet the other when time allows. Your beautiful heart always shines, my sweet friend. Warmest wishes and hugs.. ~Susan

My dear friend, we have a wild stray cat that we adopted 5 years ago here at our new home. It is blind in one eye and our son Justin first named the cat Bob. Now it even comes into our house sometimes but never stays. Your wonderful poem speaks volumes is definitely a gem. A fav too.

Aw, it doesn't surprise me to know that your generous kindness extends to your son, Justin, as well, Robert. How wonderful that your family offers a helping hand to a stray.. we've done the same too with many over the years. Your heart just can't help to go out to them, being as alone and desperate as thy usually are. A safe haven is a precious place. Thank you for sharing Bob's story with me, my dear friend. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Lovely penning Susan, it's amazing what a stray cat can do for a life. Remember reading a book about a stray cat changing the life of a little boy with autism, amazing indeed! Blessings, Gordon

Susan, So nice when two hearts find each other through fate. Who would ever believe a thing so fragile could return such great strength. An echo in your thoughtful poem that mirrors the soul of a rescued orphan. -Richard

Gorgeous, Susan, I like the contrasts of 'power of vulnerability' and 'neglected yet beautiful' and the healing message of NOT letting nature take its course, and how nurturing another can be healing to yourself as well (one more note, if I may, I also like how you wrote this in the second person 'you' instead of first 'I' or third 'he/she' - I don't see much of that type and am glad to find it here) Am so thrilled to see new poems from you, my friend!

Lovely Susan. My daughter has a cat she got like that. The mother actually brought her to my daughters yard and the little kitten cried and cried and when she went to the door it literally pushed it's way into the house so desperate for warmth and safety. She couldn't turn it away. She never saw the mother again. Love this. God Bless, JB

Aw, I love that your daughter took the kitten in, the mother cat's instincts were correct about your daughter's kind heart - animal moms are so intuitive it's amazing. Thank you for sharing your beautiful thoughts with me, Judy, you have brightened my evening. Warmest wishes, my friend.. ~Susan
