One Step Behind
daddy
while you were away
I learned how to coo and to crawl
walk and tell time
don't know if its true what they say
that time grows wings and then flies far away
but daddy you're one step behind
daddy your one step behind...
daddy
while you were away
I learned how to ride- learned how to climb
I understand you were busy
making gold out of callous and time
but daddy you're one step behind
daddy your one step behind...
daddy, don't know if you Knew
because you flew the sinking coup
earned my degree working two jobs
going to night school
oh by the way I met the love of my life
gave her a ring made from respect, love and time
daddy you're one step behind
daddy you're one step behind...
every man learns that time does truly fly
heard through the grapevine you decided to up and die
to many years have past I wish i could cry
hope you made peace with your broken clock
funny but it seems I'm becoming a chip off the old block
my my my how time truly flies
daddy I'm one step behind
daddy I'm one step behind
