One Dry River

Look at you, you will never amount to anything You are ugly, nobody likes you You are stupid You are an embarrassment You are not welcome in this house anymore Drinks, Drinks, from morning to night to fill that void The empty space lacking love, the vacant hole lacking appreciation Look at you What do you think people think when they see you like that You need to mature, you are not a child anymore Your younger sibling acts more mature than you Don't make me hit you Bullies, Bullies all those younger than him, all those "better" than him Look at you, you are not like the rest of my other kids Its either you leave this house, or I do We cannot live like this You can take your dreams somewhere else I curse you, you cannot live with people You will never get along with people Rebels, Rebels, the only way to express herself hates, hates, the only thing that she knows, the only thing that gives her peace

I'm not sure what it is about the darker writes that attract me, but I really connect to this. Not because it in any way reflects any of my own experiences, but just because it reaches deep into how insecurities are born, and how they shape us. This is powerful and moving. Thank you for sharing this one.

Powerful poem Njeri. How do we teach a person denied love and nurturing from the start to value themselves and not see the world through hateful eyes, not to be suspicious of everybody always expecting the twisted knife. One second of trust can open that door for them and change their lives. Kind regards, Ian
