Old Melancholy Always Comes Around

Inviting happy thoughts in reverie Recalling times when family was near What fun we had while making memories Those are the moments treasured, oh so dear Their ringing laughter always makes me smile To think the silly things we did and said And even though at times one would get riled The love we shared when hurtful tears were shed But then my loneliness will bring me down My happiness is swallowed up in blue Old melancholy always comes around Sad feelings of depression then subdue I'm thankful for the happy times we had But when I am alone they leave me sad September 26 2016

A beautiful sonnet, Daniel. Recalling past happy memories can bring momentary smiles, but the realization that they can't be brought back soon turns the feeling to sadness! Regards // paul

Loniliness..haunt us...But when we turn it into solitude...We can dance with the memory and be grateful for such moments instead of sad..Love love your poem.

Thank you, Sunita. I find them very accommodating as I can usually express myself in 14 lines. My only drawback is, once you get the meter down it starts to affect the other forms you write. I'm sure you will write an excellent sonnet. I appreciate your kind comments and support.

A beautiful sonnet, Daniel:) reminds me of this verse found in Proverbs 14:13 - "Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness."

It is so true. Lovely memories almost always remind one of their loneliness. Thank you for the verse:) I appreciate your friendship, Jo.

Sometimes you worry me DT. You write a lot of sadness into some of your sonnets. I guess that's a testament to your skills...

Thank you, Charlie. No need for worry my friend. I'm sure everyone has dealt with their share of sadness. I seem to be able to draw on my sad life experiences in my writing. They drive me to be a stronger person:)

That is right, Elissa. It works both ways. If I am sad, I can think about the good times and find myself smiling very quickly. I appreciate your kind comments and support.

I hate when the loneliness and melancholy come a calling. Why cant the happiness just remain?
