October Days
Morning deceived me in its venue
dark, gray skies continued,
drip drop droppings of cold rain
dragging on in a weekend strain.
September closed in wind-swept chills
stalking the heated summer thrills,
leaving one unendless cloud of gray
gracing the first of October days.
There is a rush of seasonal perks
green grass, flowers bloom in the last burst,
but every morning wakes within a haze
colder chills and icy rain maze.
Trees cling to their clustered eaves
branches forced to dance in every breeze
apples ripen but are small and demure
a choice for everyday cures.
Squirrels gather to bury nuts and acorns
as pathways from rain stream forms
with houses Halloween adorned
for witches, ghosts and goblins reborn.
This is the first call for fires and hearth
October spreads upon the revolving earth
revealing every color known to man
to walk and view the earthly sands.
