No Pup

Excited puppy; she’s no pup, And yet she runs in circles ‘round. I know she’s younger in dog years, But her time comes, not long from now, When she will feel age more than I. It’s strange how time moves fast and slow Although we’re both in the same place, I’ll miss you, girl, but I’ll not dwell; I’m thankful for our time right now, And we’ll enjoy things day by day. I’m 60 now; you’re 49, (That’s if you multiply by seven), But only God knows which of us Will exit first en route to heaven. For all dogs go, the movie says; I have no trouble with the thought That joy awaits us both up there With fields of green where we can roam. For if the lion and the lamb No longer play the deadly game, Instead are resting side by side, Then surely there must be a place for both of us to rest, abide. But I will leave that in His hands, For He alone knows that for sure. I’m 60 now; you’re 49 When time is measured in your years, But which of us lives longest here? That’s both uncertain and unclear. For God alone knows both our days; He knows the numbers of our hairs. But I know this: He watches you; The sparrow’s also in his care. ---------- Thanks to all who answered my question regarding what form it is called when you mix rhymed and unrhymed - I switched it to free verse at the suggestion of a number of folks. Y'all are awesome!

Anatole France quote....“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” now in this poem i see lines beautifully captured by a poet with a soul having no missing parts...great capture of God's wonderous gift...Loved reading this

In No Pup The Exuberant Youth is a bit envied by The Elderly, who still means well and radiates love. Methinks Poet Kyser thinks The Youthful Human and Animal should sometimes check excitement while The Aged is within visual distance.

wow that mention of the sparrow rings from my mom...she used to say, if He knows when the sparrow falls, He also knows who feeds them, and you need all the help you can get....loved her humor but your poem is all about mom and her love of animals...thanks for reminding me of a great mom who loved her animals

Jeff, these are poignant thoughts, regarding both aging and the close bond that grows between ourselves and our pets. All your musings are very relateable and I congratulate you on your POTD acknowledgement. Regarding your question, blank verse is traditionally used to describe non-rhymed iambic pentameter, as Shakespeare used in many of his plays. But hey, we're poets - we make rules so we can break them, right?

Thanks, John, I enjoyed writing it - seem to do best when I "stick with what I know". Also, thanks for the guidance on the poetry form. I wasn't sure free verse could rhyme or have a consistent structure, and had never seen blank verse that rhymed but it seemed more highly structured, but I ended up guessing wrong.

I think so too; Romans 8 tells us all of creation is groaning, so it's not all about us! Have a great day!

Reflecting on your question again about what type of verse this is, I'd nominate 'Universal' to best characterize this wonderful poem. Congratulations on POTD, Jeff. First of many, I'm sure. Have a spectacular Monday! ~ Gershon

Maybe 'free verse' -- but really, how much does that matter anyway in the grand scheme of things? Please know that this was a very enjoyable and touching read. ~ The Spare O

Thanks, Gershon. Inside a gruff exterior, I guess I'm a bit of a softy, especially with Missy - we've been through a lot together. On the forms, I'm just curious. I never knew there were so many different forms, with so many different names. I've been reading through the types just trying to learn something.

Thanks, Debra! Yes, I am somewhat "attached" to Missy - she's a gentle dog, she lets my grandkids maul her pretty badly, crawl all over her, so you have to love that! We enjoy our walks in the woods together immensely.
