Night Fantasies
Perched astride his most gallant metal steed,
the young lad dreamed of horses, knights and speed.
The golden moon blessed him with gentle rays,
heart softened by the burdens he would face.
A calm moonlit lake revealed to his eyes,
reflection betraying a wondrous guise.
Upon its banks stood a marvel in white,
gorgeous, magnificent creature of light.
He stared at the creature, its eyes held fast
locked on to each other, a spell was cast.
Leaning to touch it on a sudden whim,
It raised a hoof too; the creature was him.
With a neigh of glee he clattered away
wheeling and prancing and dancing in play.
Tossing his mane, he reared up to the sky,
a thing of stark beauty, nimble and spry.
Something watched him from the top of a tree,
silent and deadly, a thing wild and free.
It landed before him, light on its feet,
a mighty dragon, his heart missed a beat.
A rumbling voice echoed within his ears,
Bidding sweet welcome and calming dark fears.
Night's hidden world exploded into life
with excitement and joy, pleasure ran rife.
Out crept pixies, goblins, dryads, fairies,
mermaids and centaurs, satyrs and brownies
The world spun with colours so rich and deep,
in rhythmic beats till the boy fell asleep.
His mum found him dozing by the window,
a smile on his lips, his face was aglow.
Wheeling his chair off, she helped him to bed,
tucking him in with a kiss on his head.
