New Year, Past Years

Dawn, looking as blush as twilight, Where the silhouette of trees still lingers And envelopes me— Transporting me to my world of yesterday. I can still hear my children’s laughter; Watch them play and dance To their sweet singing tunes. How quiet the morning is now That they are grown and gone. As I look out toward the grey sea And Diamond Head I can see their faces in the rising sun. © Connie Marcum Wong Note: I didn't know what to expect when I posted this first poem at Poetry Soup. I certainly did not expect the warm welcome I received. I immediately felt accepted as a fellow poet by the members through their comments. I was encouraged to join by Andrea Dietrich who assured me I would like it here. She was right and I am grateful that she introduced me to this magical place where the expression of poetry is so honored. This poem became featured that same month, to my delight, and I met many new friends through their comments because of that. I also entered this poem in a contest and was given an honorable mention. It took me a while to learn to navigate this site and learn the rules of entering contests and how everything works, but soon I was comfortable here and welcoming others. What a blessing it is to share poetry with other poets who appreciate poetry as much as I do. For Beginnings Matter Contest Sponsor Richard Lamoureux

To add to my previous comment, I love your author's note, your appreciation for those poets who made you feel so welcome in 2010, and how you have "paid it forward" by welcoming new poets with your warmth. I too am grateful for such unexpected welcoming arms, and am inspired by your poem to do the same for others. Hugs ~ John

It is very difficult to watch your children leave home and move away. Some parents can’t let go. I have a close relationship with all my children which made it very difficult to watch them leave. I wrote this poem after my last daughter left home. Thank you so much for your wonderful thoughtful comment my friend. I am so fortunate to have met you through Poetry Soup. I hope you will have a poem in the PS anthology. Nov. 10th is the deadline. Blessings xxoo

Connie, this is a beautiful first post at PS, both for your touching tribute to "empty nesting" (which my wife and I are going through now) and for your lovely acknowledgment to Andrea and the Soup community for the warm welcome you received. I think that speaks for a lot of Soupers! Warmly, John

Yes, beginnings matter for we must step out! PS has been one of my best experiences. Previously I was writing on a FB poetry sight then one of the friends there asked my if she could feature one of my poems on her blog then she directed me to PS. I am so glad she did. A lovely first poem brimming with memories, joy and imagery!

What an excellent first post, a poem which highlighted your talent.. How we change as poets, how we interact with so many, some still here, some long gone and so many that forever live in our hearts..

Thank you very much Silent. I haven't been around much past two weeks as I am having company from the mainland and have been busy cleaning and preparing for their visit. My daughter is also coming from Calif. for her birthday. So little time for poetry these days. Stay well....blessings, Connie

Congrats, Connie. This is a lovely piece...I know the feelings. My daughter was away for two years. Now she's back for a while and then she'll leave. :( I'm glad you've come to love this place. I do too. hugs

Thank you Charlotte. I wrote this after my last child married and moved out. Our house is now filled with our granddaughter's laughter and I am fulfilled and happy helping to raise her.

This was sweet, a nostalgic look back. Maybe I should take more appreciation of the moment as the past always seems much better.
