Nature's Smile
As I stood on the porch at eveningtide,
I saw them slowly flying away with a glide.
Their wings were spread to catch the air,
The distance great to get to their lair.
But I saw something else in that scene,
I saw a face, somber and serene.
It made me think of the day gone by,
As the sun fell lower in the sky.
Somehow I knew this moment to preserve,
I grabbed my camera without reserve.
And just as the birds spread their wings,
In that dimming light of evening.
I snapped the shutter to catch the view,
And preserve it here for me and you.
But when I pushed that button round,
The image caught was more profound.
It was the face of the day the Lord just spent,
And was surely there, but heaven sent.
I have marvelled oft at that same view,
But twice, could not this image do.
For only once ever comes the chance,
To catch a likeness with this romance.
The deft glow of the sky's dimming gaze,
With those birds flying in the distant haze.
Preserved they are for all to see,
Just what that moment did for me.
And like that image entrusted there,
All can see it...crisp and clear.
Its face is made by light, darkness, and the birds out a mile,
It reminds me too, that I should smile!
