My Spiritual Journey
A young lad of twelve I found myself
At the altar in our small country church
Confessing my sins,
To insure my spiritual health.
Then came the call to serve as a pastor
Grandma had always said I was the “preacher”
In the family,
I set out to serve my Master.
On to college and seminary at length
I studied hard and prepared to do my best
To serve the Lord,
With all my heart, mind, soul, and strength.
My faith sometimes wavered along the way
I wondered why Christians seemed, at times
So self-serving and phony,
It is especially hard to be “righteous” every day.
I finally retired after forty-some years of service
Seeking to find lasting peace through meditation
On the universe,
When I focus on nobler things, I feel less nervous!
