My Mother's Eyes
If I'd not known my mother's eyes
Perhaps the sky would hold more blue
If I'd not seen my mother smile
Perhaps the sunrise on the hill,
would shine in gold... in bolder hues
If I had never felt her touch,
while brushing tears beneath my lash
with gentle hands, that tucked a curl, behind my ears,
those simple tasks
Perhaps the softness of the breeze
Would be a soothing, more gentle....pleasing
Or sprinkled raindrops more refreshing...
If I had never felt her arms enfold me
Perhaps the sun would be more warming
If I had never heard her voice
the softness of her gentle voice
the hum of comfort in the night
the lullaby that spoke of love
Perhaps the song of nightingales
Or whispered coos when evening calls
Would sound more clear
and sweeter to my wanting ear
But as it is......her love was all
the love that filled me to the brim
was not a whim, nor false recall
As beautiful as nature is,
it does fall short...in what was then
Such loveliness cannot compare
