My Ego Is: a Hungry and Charming Cat
My hungry and charming (ego?) cat
I have a soft and charming cat,
Always the center of attention
And thinks he’s really where it’s at.
But he only notices me
When he is hungry (though always fat),
And becomes very clingy and seductive.
And when I don’t respond:
Is unscrupulously destructive.
He is conscientiously lazy
And utterly unproductive
And lets the rats and mice
Enjoy my bread and rice.
But he is always hard to ignore –
Meowing constantly at the door
With his whiskers elegant and long
And beautiful silver grey mane.
He sleeps for hours upon
His velvet cushion,
So cool, self-contented and vain.
And whenever I am late,
There is no sensible debate
And is quickly irate
And growls, scratches or bites,
But stops the fight
When he feels full and fed.
And when I stroke his royal head,
He stretches
And purrs and rubs against my leg
And I am happy because I feel valued
But, I delude
Myself,
Because we know who’s the boss.
He marks his territory stinkily and meticulous
And anybody that is ridiculous
Enough, to want intrude,
Or cross his path
Will swiftly feel his rude
And indignant wrath
And sharpened claws.
But anyone can see
That behind his ferocious teeth
And underneath
His brave lion’s roar.
He is really shaking like a leaf.
