My Baby Behind
Alert all night
So to not oversleep
As dawn ended night
My eyes wouldn’t keep
We managed attendance
A moment to spare
But, greeted the entrance
And shrills filled the air
Quickly consumed
By familiar terror
Could we exit the room?
Declaring an error
How could this be
We’d been here before
I considered a plea
knees on the floor
Too many adults
Were staring at me
If I had a pulse
Alone, I would leave
I turned my back
To the sound of her cries
With minimal tact
I made it outside
Another drive home
Just as last time
I feel so alone
My baby, behind
