Written in 2017, I recalled my childhood group of friends and I giving a dead field mouse a viking funeral in a nearby stream for being so brave trying to navigate through a unfilled in ground pool. It was both very sweet but it awakened a sense of fear of my own mortality, and reawakened some trauma I had of seeing my passed away brother.

Amidst summer’s day Post middle school finale In the concrete valley A vanguard viking lay We gathered as a ragtag crew Peeled his corpse off the floor Carrying him, despite the gore. To the stream, as we knew what to do Fashioning a mausoleum of straw Hoping he felt no disdain, His grave enveloped in flame And gently floated away. It was there I thought to myself, “What is the meaning of it all?”

A fave right away…poignancy and introspection. It felt like a scene from a movie. Well done…so sorry for your loss. Today, well really yesterday as it is after midnight, my mom has been gone 3 years.

firstly i am sorry for the loss of your mother, i wish you solace as you continue to move forward in your grief. the goal of this when i wrote it was to evoke a feeling of Stand By Me, so I am glad it seemed to shine through. I appreciate you taking the time to read these words
