Monsters and Marvels

Those monsters creep into my bed. Each sleeping snuggly in my head, Until alas in dreams they wake. To make me shiver, cry, and quake. Those huge white teeth reflecting light, And eyes that sparkle in the night, Attack my soul to their delight. As they stir up my nightly fright. Some carry hoes, knives, or sickles. Sweat upon my forehead trickles. Then, on their alter I am laid. My arms and legs with ropes are staid. The others come to gather ‘round. Chanting where knives and hoes abound. The multitude festooned with spikes, Snake-tongues prepare to make their strike. Above my chest that gruesome stake, The serpent, like a deadly snake, Posing above my soul to take. Begins to stab, but I awake. Upon my knees beside my bed, I thank the Lord my fear has fled. And marvel at his awesome loves. Then, we spoon-snuggle like two doves. I shiver near your taunting hips. And cry as tears drop to your lips. I clasp sweet safety in your grip. Then, melt into our loving trip. ã October 10, 2014 Dane Ann Smith-Johnsen Written for Poetry Soup Member Contest: Monsters and Marvels Sponsored by Debbie Guzzi
