out of you!
She thought a slap in the face was a sign of love.
She thought being abused was every child’s routine.
She thought all adults yelled obscenities and locked their children in the closet.
She thought hunger was supposed to be a constant.
Why would this person be nice to me? What is their evil plan?
I do not deserve these things.
I am a bad, bad girl. Daddy and Mommy have told me so.

She hated the teacher who asked her how she got a black eye.
She resented the neighbor who offered her an ice cream cone.
When you live in a world of monsters …
monsters are your norm
monsters are what you know and expect
monsters are what you hope someday to be

She missed the monsters.
I cry for her every night.
Hopefully, someday soon,
nightmares will become nightmares and she will fear the monsters.
