Missing In Love

They made a pact before he went off to war That on his return they would wed He became missing in action in a land so hostile and far She cried when she heard the news they had alleged The disappointment drove her over the edge Turning to alcohol to relieve her pain Saddened by the broken pledge Now she would never see him again But he had been rescued and did return He searched for her from sunrise till setting sun Of her whereabouts he was fain to learn But the one he loved had become a nun He was depressed, his heart broken in two And to a higher power she had become faithful and true For Paula's "Pact" contest

Reads like a love tragedy. The ravages of war certainly go beyond the battle field and the fruits are often bitter.Lovely sonnet Joseph!
