Memory of a Party

College nights in Kentucky Not at all about blue grass But blaring voices Ricocheting across campus And just beyond Past the white picket fences My blond friend walked his bike next to me Greasy chains and rattling spokes After a couple beers, leaving the cute one behind He looked at me and told me I was handsome That if I played my cards right I could have whoever I wanted So I watched him like a god disappear On that cherry red Schwinn Wondering if I needed him to say that To feel it behind hazel eyes Today I still, still, wonder Silent questions and answers But it’s my choice to feel beautiful Even if, right now, from a distance
