I spent about 9 years between France, Belgium, West Germany, Germany, and Macedonia.  I always thought it was absurd to use measuring cups for weight.  Even using the metric system instead of cups/pints/quarts/gallons, it would have made much more sense for them to use either cubic centimeters or fractions of a liter, both which are VOLUMES.
I moved to Europe. They measured weight by volume. Completely absurd!
