Lost and Found At the Circus
LOST AND FOUND AT THE CIRCUS
i apologize for forgetting
you. this is not the way
it is supposed to be.
but something happened
and i see you,
but i don’t know
who you are.
i wish i had had time
to apologize before
i left, but i did not know
i was going.
i did not know things
were changing right
in front of me,
us.
you smiled, told me
you apologized for not being
able to stop the disappearing act
i was performing.
you held me, told me
it was like watching
a circus act
while eating cotton candy.
you laughed and touched my face,
reminded me this is the way
it is supposed to be.
later, you bought peanuts
and we licked our fingers
as we watched a ballerina dance
on the high wire.
we laughed and waited for her to fall.
she never did.
