Long Shadows
You're feeling both hungry and cold,
cruising the crowd, your head hung low.
For, when your body's bought and sold,
you search faces for tricks you know.
Cash casts long shadows on the street
in a city devoid of trust.
And when innocence needs to eat,
morality's sold for a crust.
Depression slowly entraps you
inside the land of, let's pretend.
And because those you trust are few,
you curse fate for lack of a friend.
Sleep takes an emotional toll
when nightmares come; you cannot run.
And with hope tucked into your soul,
you stir until the night is done.
Yet, by beating back fear, you've won
a reprieve, surviving the night.
And waking to a rising sun,
your confidence grows in its light.
