Legend

of

Ogopogo

Chilled by cold Canadian air Lake Okanagan’s waters run deep And so does its Ogopogo A legend the centuries keep Native Americans feared it Animal sacrifices were made Before they boarded their canoes And set out to traverse the lake Campfire stories natives told Of the monster “Snake in the Lake” Long before Europeans arrived To find odd figures in boats’ wakes On the same latitude as Loch Ness Ogopogo is thought to dwell Beneath the cliffs of Squally Point In an underwater cave’s well Indian legends oft’ based on fact And more than lore is in this mix Thirty cars filled with tourists Stared in awe, 1926 From fifteen to forty feet long Lean body with a serpent’s head Noted scientists suggest it is A primitive whale once thought dead Curious folks throughout the world Are drawn to the creature’s lake With two hundred sightings to date Do you think what they’re seeing is fake? Ogopogo is a new word to me, Carolyn, but your descriptive poem soon served to enlighten me. Had Cherl Dunn still been alive she would have enjoyed reading this poem, a subject close to her heart. ~ Regards & Hugs // paul

Like Cherl, I am a fan of history and folklore. The Ogopogo seems to be real as so many people have seen it and even taken photos.

I can't write it off Carolyn, but I'm Getting on a bit now my intellect dimmed By cumulative events I've witnessed, a description known as experience, and that is Nowhere valued as much as theories! I will Add that should such an animal exist today it Would cause havoc in evelotion theories The same as oak beams in Tudor buildings are Part petrified after only 800 yrs not millions Claimed for wood to stone and many have not Been submerged in water, just oxygen elements A write Enjoyed by I.'

Hi Carolyn: There are many legends and some never die. All legends emit a sign.

I remember reading about this creature that is a lot like descriptions of Scotland's Nessie. You expressed this legend brilliantly Carolyn. I hope it is a top winner for you. xxoo

- We have such a legend in Norway too, Carolyn :) - According to popular belief, Seljordsormen is a sea or linen worm, that is, a large, snake-like sea creature, which resides in the 13 km-long Seljords water in Seljord municipality in Telemark / Norway :) - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

Thank you for the link, Sunshine! I just looked it up and it does appear your "sea worm" could be related to Nessie. Really enjoyed the articles on this!!

I hadn't heard of this one Carolyn, must Google it for more, love this stuff. They often say some creatures from the dinasaur age have survived. Good luck. Tom

Indeed, there are some throwbacks to the dinosaur eras that appear from time to time. And we still don't know what creatures inhabit the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean. Thanks for reading!

Hello Carolyn … interesting tale indeed. Very hard to prove one way or the other. We have Bunyips and Drop Bears here to keep people interested in folklore. The extinct Tasmanian Tiger is still searched for, and there have been fuzzy photos claiming to be the tiger - thank you Caroline - Lindsay

Yes, I did some research a few years ago on the Tasmanian Tiger. It may very well still be alive. I'd love to know more about your Bunyips and Drop Bears!

Great legend, Carolyn, and what a name, Ogopogo! Did you notice that Ogopogo is the same backwards as forwards?! :) ~ YoBoy

There was some fuss a few decades ago when Japanese fishermen claim to have caught a Plasiosaur that was a species that survived the end of the dinosaur reign. I would like to see what creatures inhabit the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. Said to be the deepest ocean.

When we were in Germany on a tour, the guide told us much about Loch Ness. Though I didn't know anything about Ogopogo, you have so richly explained in splendid details this legend. Regardless of what one believes, it is always a joy to relish the stories. Excellent poem Carolyn--you certainly made it believable. All the best.
