This poem was written by me in response to the current course of negative events unfolding in Ukraine and the undeniable role played by President Vladimir Putin of Russia in shaping and influencing those events.  I was and I am also quite appalled by Mr. Putin's blatant disregard for established international norms for dealing with a sovereign country and for his violation of international laws and treaties.  I was also quite shocked by his rather nonchalant attitude with the recent downing of Malaysian Airline Flight MH17 by separatist Russian rebels.  His actions are reprehensible and not in the proper tradition of a real democratic leader.  He wants to take Russia back to the dark past of former Soviet times, and not lead her into the future with a sense of good governance, enlightenment, and respect for other nations.  (Gary Bateman - August 9, 2014)

King Vlad is anything but Democracy’s man of the hour. Rather, à coup sûr, he’s really Stalin’s nasty little boy who ironically parades "svoboda" and "glasnost" like he really means them—actually he means them not. King Vlad’s political traditions and pronouncements are well-known among those who are sadly aware of his tapestry of treachery and deceit—oh so slovenly woven for all to see, just like some of his fellow-gangster favorites: Lenin, Stalin, Beria, Molotov, Brezhnev, and Andropov. King Vlad is anything but a real world leader . . . His "Kind" are an open book for all to see and understand what they are and what they mean for all who strive for openness, decency, and real compassion in the twenty-first century world order. King Vlad—just like his Dracula name sake, is a man without a soul, without a conscience, who shall never shudder, wince or cry at the piercing death rattle of a Kalashnikov. King Vlad is truly no friend of Democracy, sounding even at times not unlike Hitler; he’s a demon leader with innocent blood on his hands, always quick with the old Soviet reply: Lie . . . Deny . . . Accuse . . . Reject . . . Criticize . . . all tools of this redoubtable master of prevarication. King Vlad should know that the Heavenly Souls of flight MH17 know the "bitter truth," gorkaya pravda, surrounding his lies, treachery, and deceit—all pejorative attributes to a man with the mask of a real monster who had the very best Soviet teachers. And so Generalissimo Stalin . . . How do you like your nasty little boy now??? He’s right up your alley, right??? “Putin” has five letters just like “Devil.” Gary Bateman, Copyright © All Rights Reserved (August 9, 2014) (Free Verse)

This is apropos for today and Trump. Hillary hater Putin began his hating during this period of time. A Trump supporter once told me it was not time for a woman in the White House. Now they have a berserk, unintelligent lunatic there. I have never heard so much criticism of a President in all of my life. I just did the same that Ashley did.

Hello James, I've never waivered from what I wrote in this poem and two later poem about Vladimir Putin. I used to be a Soviet Specialist as a military intelligence officer with the U.S. Army when I was formerly on active duty. My view of Russia, Putin, and the move to return to the old USSR has not changed at all. Yes, we have a True Dummy for President presently, and things will not improved until he either resigns or is impeached from office. Cheers and Best, Gary

Gary, I admire your poetry so much that I had to come read your first write... A powerful, impassioned and intellectual write declaring your disdain of King Vlad in a compelling, intriguing and poetic way. I enjoyed your view as I share your feelings. Very elegant testimony throughout with your fourth stanza being my favorite in this outstanding write. MY warmest wishes to you my friend!

Thank you Susan for your deep read of my earlier poetry. I also wrote one other later from this one called: King Vlad Redux - A Second Cold War, and one other, a Double Dactyl, entitled: King Vlad the Greatest (as I remember). Just so you know, I used to be years ago a Soviet Affairs Specialist among other responsibilities when I served as a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. I also served in Berlin as a military commander when it was still an occupation city before the final unification of Germany. Russian just happens to be one of my language specialties. And unlike, Mr. Trump, I have no trust whatsoever in Vladimir Putin and the rest of his cronies. They are all "KGB" all the way!! Please feel free to read any and all of my poems, as you choose to do so. Most of the poems here through early 2015 are in my first-published book; the rest will be in my next-planned book. I do enjoy your poetry too very much!! Cheers and Best, Gary

Thanks Arthur!! You should check out the other two poems I did later too on Vladimir Putin. "King Vlad Redux -- A Second Cold War (similar to this one), and a Double Dactyl write on him that I posted later. All people who truly love Democracy should be fully aware of what Mr. Putin represents. Also, check "The Old Dark House" poem. (I mention your name parenthetically in my Author's Notes. You will like this poem!!) Best Always, Gary

"King Vlad—just like his Dracula name sake, is a man without a soul, without a conscience, who shall never shudder, wince or cry at the piercing death rattle of a Kalashnikov." My favorite stanza, a very powerful poem, Gary. You certainly know what you are talking about. And thanks for the background information. Your poems are a great read, from beginning to end... Always, Laura

Laura, I see you're doing a deeper read of my poetry. Many Thank!! About this poem, you should know that I used to be a Soviet Specialist among other things when I served on active duty as a U.S. Army officer and later with the DoD. And Russian just happens to be one of my several languages. And so, this is an international flavor I bring to my poetry from time-to-time, especially on polemic topics of great import to the world we live in. I wrote a sequel to this poem entitled: "King Vlad II Redux." You should check it out too!! I live in Germany, and Russia is not that far away . . . Best Always, Gary

a very interesting one here. I decided to come and check out your very first write here and also was curious because today I saw the Dracula Untold movie. Hmmm, sounds as if you are describing Dracula himself, but at least the one in the movie was killing for a good cause. That makes this Vlad worse than Drac himself!!

Hello Andrea . . . I am trying to get caught up on all of the replies and correspondence. Haven't forgotten you!! Have not seen Dracula Untold yet. Vlad in this poem refers to "Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin." My notes explain why I wrote this piece. I used to be a "Soviet Specialist" when I was an active duty U.S. Army officer. Vlad is not a nice person. Cheers, Gary

Robert, Thanks for checking this one out. I've have a King Vlad II (Redux) planned in the future to address Vladimir's continued Hanky Panky as he continues to usher in Cold War II. I really enjoyed your frozen winter piece with the Germans and French in Russia. Check out too my ISIS poem (The Unholy Ones). Quite poignant for today!! Obama fears Putin for sure. Best!! Gary

Liam . . . Thanks for taking a read of my "King Vlad." And thanks for your very kind comments. I know that this was the first poem I posted to PoetrySoup on 9 August right after I joined. The Russian adventurism in the Ukraine and the shoot down of Flight MH17 compelled me to write about Putin and his negative activities. My last line sums him up quite well. Best!! Gary

Hello Talicia, I am very glad to hear from you. It is indeed a very trying situation internationally at present with Mr. Putin's negative actions in the Ukraine. I used to be a Soviet specialist with the U.S. Government and military, which is why I was very passionate about these events in "King Vlad." I am writing full-time now and with more poems to follow. Best Wishes, Gary
