"Sweet child in time, you'll see the line the line that's drawn between good and bad" Having cold sweats again in this godforsaken ninety degree heat. Shivering uncontrollably. God, what I'd do for a warm comforter right now. Zombies all around me mumbling incoherent poetry no one understands or even cares to hear. Young people half my age or less without souls, without heart, without vision. Nam 1968. The nightmares won't stop even now, fifty-six years later. Nineteen years old. Just a kid. What did I know about good and bad, right from wrong? I did what I was told just like everyone else. When I was young, I used to dream of Eden. "See the blind man shooting at the world bullets flying taking toll" Deep in the jungle, trying to rest but sleep is elusive. Out of the corner of my eye I espy a young child, a girl I think. Or is it just a dream? She looks ragged, hungry, sad. Tears are streaming down her cheeks as she stumbles through the brush toward us. The air is suffocating, a train is rolling through my head when suddenly I hear a blast from an M16. Sarge yells "Everyone down!" Then an explosion, but this time I can't hear a thing, just debris flying everywhere. And then the child is no more. When I open my eyes, a tiny hand lay two feet away. So delicate, so precious. What the hell am I doing here? "You'd better close your eyes bow your head wait for the ricochet" Kensington avenue is hell in the real world. It is here I exist and it is here I will die, homeless, sick and alone. The needle is my one last and true friend, for when I am high I am free. It is then that the dreams of Eden reappear, if but for a moment. I am seventy-five years old now, but I never really got to grow up. For you see, back there, in '68, I was just a child in time. dreams are illusions white lady offers solace forgiveness denied *Kensington Ave, Philadelphia PA **Song lyrics from Child in Time by Deep Purple

I just finished a book called, "The Women" by Kristen Hannah about the nurses who served in Vietnam. Eye opening. American dropped the ball big time with our service men and women, during and after that war. I'm glad you wrote about this and expressed it so well! Blessings, Crystol

War leaves a trail of destruction behind. It shatters families and communities. The experience of seeing the horrors of war at a young age when one cannot distinguish between good and bad is so miserable. Hearing the blast of missiles and bombs and hiding for safety is traumatic. I don't know anything about that song. But your description is powerful and the incidents referred to are excruciating! Hearty Congratulations dear Tom on your trophy win.

Congratulations on your trophy win, Tommy! I was just telling S.V. I'd wished I were a D.P. fan seems I missed out. Albeit fiction, this is true for so many. These are the holiest of days, we should help each other as much as we can. Deep indeed! Well-done~Anaya

I don't know this song, hardly anything by that rock group Deep Purple, but it's easy to see what they were singing about. Very vivid writing of the horror of war from someone I am sure never fought in Nam. Great job and congrats on the trophy.

Thx and you're right, JW's are politically neutral, though I was raised Catholic. But that's part of the challenge of writing fiction. Thx

What a terrible thing to read. It was very good. It is terrible because this is the reality many have lived. My father came back from WWII scarred for life. He had PTSD, but they didn't call it that and didn't really know what to do about it. My friends father was torpedoed twice in WWII. He got out and stayed drunk the rest of his life. War is hell and people go for the ones they love and left behind.

Tom so much to comment here. I felt pain, escape, and circumstances beyond our control governing emotions that are better left to rest. Heartfelt what you soldiers endured, witnessed and experienced at such a young age. It wasn't right, it wasn't fair but there they were in the jungle, in a Politicians war, serving their country for an unexplained cause of perpetual destruction, for ammunition Corporations greed and Cronyism among the elites, prolonging the war for profit. is another example of destruction among us. Drug addicts escaping, not wanting to face their reality through a needle, a toke, heroine, alcohol, what ever is available. So sad they are not helped, detoxed from their demons, and provided shelters, and fed by their government. Where do you start pointing the finger? Who is responsible for this chaos? More importantly what we as an individual can do about helping those on the Avenue and all soldiers who have been traumatized in war. Well written Tom you have brought out so much heartfelt emotion in this unfair world we live in. Great work and such an incredible piece to read. Congratulations on your finish, and the judges or judge got it right this time.

Grim realities are beautifully illustrated. A gloomy pessimistic scene, yet, filled with rays of optimism, is seen too. "white lady offers solace". A grand poem. Congratulations!

Reminds me of the scripture: "Rachel weeping for her children because they are no more", and the image, not unfamiliar to me, having escaped from a place like that in New York, where every word was subject to the poetry of its demonic fare ~ to see and hear and speak the horrendous tragedies of the living-dead ~ their syllables ~ their tears of stone.

When the world seems to be going out of control we go into protective mode. We take sanctuary even if it is just in our minds. Perhaps peace and order will cycle around again .Bless good soldiers everywhere. SuZ

Hi Tom, Nice to meet you here. This is such a sad state and so well expressed. Quite a few years back I read "The Family Arsenal" about the ills of war and the decadence of modern society. That story even though fictional has stayed with me all these years and I draw so many parallels with this poem. Thank you for your welcome words on my poetry

Born in 63. I get it. The shell shock the horror. The story out shines the song. But it gives a good reason for addiction. I'll say no more.
