Author's Notes:  This is a personal narrative I wrote as a reflection of my thoughts concerning the recent cold-blooded murder of the artists at Charlie Hebdo in Paris (to include the police officers, other security people, and hostages who perished in this senseless tragedy, and the follow-on pursuit to bring these terrorists to justice as of last night -- January 9th).  As a fellow writer and poet, I felt compelled to write this "Afterthought" as both a tribute and a statement on behalf of those brave souls who perished, and as an indictment against those "savages of religious tyranny" who dared to intimidate and attempted to destroy the inalienable rights of freedom of speech and expression that all of us as writers and artists hold so very dear.  And likewise, this applies too at the greater societal-level for all people who have the same equal rights for freedom of speech and expression.  (Gary Bateman - January 10, 2015) (Narrative)

JE SUIS CHARLIE — Afterthought The shock of this most frightening tragedy is practically beyond the pale of any reasonable or adequate attempt or effort to explain it or to rationalize the horrible circumstances surrounding it. Let me just say that all of us who are writers and poets ply our poetry, “our intellectual wares,” if you will, in a common written medium that expects the same unrestricted level of freedom of speech and expression exercised by those extraordinarily brave artists at “Charlie Hebdo” who were recently murdered in cold blood by self-styled Islamic extremists in Paris. It is also equally saddening and deplorable that some courageous police officers died in the line of duty defending these freedoms as well as some other security people and hostages caught up in the midst of these most terrifying circumstances. The heinous actions perpetrated by these armed extremists destroyed innocent lives and affected the lives of a number of loved ones whose burden of sadness and tragedy is unimaginable. Their actions also were an attempt to strike at the very heart of those sacred freedoms that all of us who live in open societies and democracies cherish as part of our everyday lives. The armed extremists, by their actions, also personified and demonstrated an obvious affectation for barbarity, stupidity, ignorance, and cowardice that were all on ample display as a result of what they did. Freedom of speech and expression are among those certain historic inalienable rights given to all of us by the divine hand of God himself, and certainly not by the generosity of any government or religious group (regardless of faith). The brave souls who died at Charlie Hebdo, died exercising this most sacred franchise. The point I’m driving at is this: Those extremists who committed these most reprehensible actions of recent against their fellow man did not win in spite of their collective efforts to destroy lives and to sully these precious freedoms that all of us as writers and artists hold so very dear. The outpouring of emotion and sadness in support of these slain heroes in the face of this most despicable crime is quite compelling, and underlies the continuing determination of all of us who love and cherish the freedoms of speech and expression to continue to speak out and to exercise these sacred rights without reservation. With all of this in mind, I humbly and proudly conclude my narrative to all of you here by saying and echoing as loudly as possible: “Je Suis Charlie” . . . “I am Charlie.” Gary Bateman, Copyright © All Rights Reserved (January 10, 2015) (Narrative)

Me Too!! "Je Suis Charlie." (I was thinking very much of Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson and their associated views on free speech and expression when putting this piece together.) Je Suis Charlie!! Gary

Charlie is the name that cannot be blotted out by blood and bullets. This name is now ingrained in human history as a symbol of freedom of expression. Gary, you have sketched it very skillfully. Jan, Thanks so much. I had to write this one. I agree, "The pen is mightier than the sword." I really appreciate your comment!! (If perhaps you noticed any tones of "Thomas Paine" and "Thomas Jefferson" in my defense of freedom of speech and expression -- you guessed correctly. They are two of my historical favorites!!) Best Always, Gary

Paul, Thanks so much my friend!! (BTW, I took your advice on the final verse, there are "..." now in place of the "or" -- much better indeed!! Many Thanks!!) This whole thing is terrible and unfortunately is part, I'm afraid, of something much bigger. I understand your dilemma about the working of "human minds." With fanatics this is always near impossibility to figure out. (People today are still trying to under Adolf Hitler for example!!) Best Always to you!! Gary

Actually No -- I was not in Paris during this terrible event, although I have been there in the past (a number of years ago) when I worked for the U.S. Government.

Hello Anne-Lise My Dear Friend . . . I received your post fine!! We have some bad storms too now here in Germany. I'm glad you found my narrative of interest. The terrible events recently in Paris deep disturbed me (as it has probably all of us) as a fellow poet. Ingrid was glad I got my thoughts out. (I was up part of the night, last night, scripting this narrative.) Best Wishes to you Anne-Lise!! Nice Weekend!! Gary

Quite proud the give this a Super 7 and add this narrative gem to my fav list my friend. I could not agree more with the fine message and sentiments! At some point the "western world' must take a firm and yes, harsh stand.. As all other options are voided by the massive and deep evil that engages in these barbaric actions.

Hello Robert!! Thanks for your read and the super rating. Like me, this is a subject I thought you might be interested in. I agree with you wholeheartedly. It's indeed time for everyone in the Western World to stand up and be counted for this situation was the real deal and I fear there will be more of them to come. It will take time and perseverance, but that's because of the depth of the unholy evil these fanatical groups have unleashed on the world. Best Wishes to you and your family!! Gary

Demetrios Mein Guter Freund!! Thanks so much for your read of my poem and your wonderful words. This tribute was the very least I could do in light of the horrific circumstances that unfolded at Charlie Hebdo in Paris. I felt I had to get my thoughts on paper. My words were strong and my message was clear. I think the people at Charlie Hebdo would have expected nothing less. Best Always!! Gary
