The holiday season is upon us, and I delight in the memories of my childhood yuletides. One such memory stands out quite clearly. Just before Thanksgiving, November’s blustery winds arrived, weaving frost spider webs onto Mother’s kitchen window. “Oh, my,” she invariably said, staring at their intricate designs, “It’s fruitcake weather! We’ve much to do!” Mother and I bundled up before clambering into our rickety old 1957 station wagon then making our way downtown along slippery, snow-covered streets. We parked in front of the grocery store and scurried toward the front door, the cold air nipping at our faces. I paused letting the magic of the holiday season envelop me and noticed that the air felt like delicate, frozen lace on my skin reminding me of one of my grandmother’s fancy lace doilies. “Are you coming?” Mother asked with urgency in her voice. “Time’s a wastin’!” I shook the sugary snow off my boots and followed Mother inside where she purchased packages of my favorite things: red and green candied cherries, candied pineapple, figs, walnuts, pecans, raisins, dates, and candied citron. Back home in her tiny kitchen, we carefully chopped the nuts, the candied fruits, the dates, and figs, blending them with the heavy batter, and then dumping the glorious mixture into fluted cake and loaf pans. I perched on a kitchen stool and waited, the smell of nutmeg, cinnamon, and dark molasses wafting through the air. Three hours later, the cakes emerged from the oven only to be doused with peach brandy, wrapped in cheesecloth, and then stored in every dark nook and cranny Mother could find. Every few minutes it seemed, I pestered her. “Are they done yet, Mother? Are they?” “No, not yet. Be patient. Homemade fruitcake needs to sit and ripen before it can be eaten. They get better with age.” After what seemed like months (It was really only three or four weeks), she proclaimed, “The fruitcakes are ready for wrapping.” Out came the rolls of wax paper, aluminum foil, ribbon, and the ever-so-sturdy mailing cartons. Having bundled up our packages of cheer, we took them to the post office, entrusting the local mail carriers with their safe delivery. On the way home we dropped off mini versions of Mother’s fruitcakes to neighbors, teachers, and friends then tootled home, warmed with the knowledge we’d brightened the Christmas of friends and family. As my head sank into my pillow that night, it danced with visions of folks unwrapping our gifts; sniffing the cinnamon, cloves, and peach brandy; and eating a slice of our dense, sweet fruitcake topped with a dollop of thick whipped cream. Generally, folks felt blessed when they received one of Mother’s moist, homemade fruitcakes. They were an eagerly anticipated, delicious holiday treat. I’m heartened Mother loved making those fruitcakes, and I’m touched with how thoughtfully she involved me in a decades old family holiday tradition, a tradition I revisit every year when it’s fruitcake weather.
Tis the season, For fruitcake. A little bundle of brandy-infused bread Stuffed with candied fruits and nuts. A loaf of indulgence Wrapped in clear plastic Tied off with a bow Ready to be received by those you love most. Tis the season, For fruitcake.

The good old memories of your mother and her practice of baking fruit cakes for her family, friends and neighbors are worth revisiting and worthy of emulation. The modern generation won't take so much effort to send home made gifts to others. Instead they will buy cakes from the shops and parcel them. To make fruit cakes, it takes more time and effort. Loved ambling along with you through the memory lane.

thank you, Valsa, for rambling with me down memory lane. My mom would've liked you. I agree. Folks today are too busy or too impatient to make fruitcakes and other homemade gifts. I still enjoy baking during the holidays. Hubby wishes I wouldn't work so hard, but I refuse to pass off grocery store bakery items as my own. It's my thing :-) Have a lovely day, Sara

I saw my first snow of the season last weekend. 4 inches of fluffy white. That snow brought many memories with it for my family. My mother was a huge fruitcake fan when I was a child. I have to say, I never developed a fondness. I was a lover of candy instead. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Sara. Have a blessed weekend, my friend.

glad my poem gave you a chance to briefly walk down memory lane. Snow already?! Wow. Here in Texas we almost never have snow in December...maybe in January. I loved my mom's fruitcake as well as candy. Could explain why at one time I was very obese...not now though. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend, Sara

thanks for your visit, Paula. I like re-creating my mother's fruitcakes. If I don't have the time, I buy one from the Assumption Abbey in Missouri--the cakes taste just like my mom's. Blessings, Sara

Nipping at the bud. This is a real colloquial article. Much feeling and emotion can be found. Morning frost just appeared. Ground surface is full of pine needles. Canadian Geese flew over honking last night. Trees for Christmas are even out for sale. Have an artificial one ourself. Have a resounding holiday. They have to be happy ones.

ah you’ve left me famished craving for some fruitcakes and some snacks. You are an excellent storyteller made me wonder how long does it take for you to write a story this good? You do it so seamlessly and as if it comes so easy for you. Your mother sounds like a brilliant cook and lovely soul just like you. I love the flow always and how you remember little details of conversations, and how you include them too is beyond soul warming to read. I hope this would be POTD. Cus this is lovely. FAVE

awww, thank you dearest Ink, for your kind and encouraging words about my storytelling. This particular story I wrote and edited over a couple of days. I did a lot of 'head writing' before actually sitting down at my laptop and writing the story. My mother was indeed a brilliant cook and a kind-hearted, patient soul. I'm grateful you found my words soul warming and worthy of a fave. POTD, would be lovely. Have a splendid weekend, hugs, Sara

I enjoyed your storytelling memories of making and eating fruitcakes, Sara. I’ve never used figs in one but doused them weekly with bourbon until ready to serve. I have made Frosted Italian fig cakes. Using white wine in the dough. Fruitcake is delicious as long as it’s moist.
