CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS WEEK 24 – 30th January 2016 Cervical cancer … the silent killer Every day in the UK eight women are diagnosed with cervical cancer Sadly, 1000 women die each year Adolescents are offered the HPV (Human papillomavirus) vaccine but they STILL need to have regular smear tests Smear tests don’t diagnose cancer but they can detect abnormal cell changes at an early stage, which may later develop into cancer if left untreated In the UK a smear test is available every three years to women aged 25 - 49 and every five years to women aged 50 - 65… but many women do not attend Okay, lets be frank… It’s an invasive procedure It’s not very pleasant to have done but it only takes 10 minutes of your time and it could save your life https://www.jostrust.org.uk/smearforsmear/ Jan Allison 29th January 2016

Thanks so much Lindsay the more we can spread the message the better ... if it prevents one person from having pre cancerous cells detected then it is worth it:-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks Thomas - just ten minutes really could save a life - I never miss any test offered to me, they may be invasive... but when you consider the alternative ... many years ago we lost a very dear friend to breast cancer she had a lump but wouldn't get it checked out we kept telling her she must but she left it and left it ... by the time she got round to it it was too late ... and she was a nurse:-( hugs Jan xx

I agree Arthur - the more we spread the message the more aware women should be ... lets be honest -many of the tests we undertake are invasive BUT they can save out lives:-) hugs Jan xx

well written Jan...this should reach through the universe, smear may not really be that much fun to do, and for that reason some prefer to stay off from it...I hope people like that sees this

Its a shame people don't attend the screening when it is offered - it's not the nicest procedure but for a few minutes discomfort it could save their life :-( hugs Jan xx

I personally think the test should be offered to younger women in some places it is done from the age of 20/21:-) hugs Jan xx

Good for you, Jan; raising awareness to certain important topics is praiseworthy. Just one word may prompt a person to take action before it's too late. Hugs // paul

Thanks Paul - I heard an item on Manx radio yesterday and was inspired to relay the important message - same with mammograms - they are not pleasant but they can save lives so a few minutes of discomfort is a no-brainer against the risk of having cancer not diagnosed:-) hugs Jan xx
