If I See You Again
I hear footsteps,
at least I think that's what they are
there were some before
many in fact
it is hard to discern if they are coming or going or hanging about.
Yes, I can feel you,
squeezing my hand and wondering
I can't answer, I do try
please don't cry
I am already broken enough please stop crying.
I hear all you say,
and that damned vexatious beeping,
and more than you know
I am scared too
I have no clue if I will return in full or as a mere shadow.
In fact at all really,
for the confounded clot has me at bay,
and the bindings are fresh
I moved my eye
but it was between visits and no one was there to see.
My train of thought,
I, we, childhood flashes, that time in the forest
Numbness has a sound
a continuous tone
many more footsteps, but faster, please no.
Switches inside me,
They terminate and are gone, the loss
Deafening and final
no bright lights
no tunnel, no souls holding hands waiting.
Chest falls a final time,
As I succumb to the darkness
and my last thought
of a missed kiss goodbye
That will be saved as a welcome if I see you again.
