If I could play the violin I'd write a melody euphonious to draw you in and play my rhapsody to bring a smile to your dear face and calm the storm within if I could play the violin If I could play the saxophone with timbre silvery I'd paint a poem of pure tone to laud your alchemy for you turn iron into gold and granite to gemstone if I could play the saxophone If I could coax an oboe's tone a dulcet sound divine to craft a raft for you to own - a musical lifeline when waves have knocked you off your course when winter winds have blown I'd play a soothing oboe tone If I could sing a heaven-sent anthem or hymn profound I wouldn't need an instrument when you feel nearly drowned I'd whisper arias of hope my mouthpiece, bow, and strings are prayers for God to heal your wings and soar beside as heaven sings.

What a sweet thing to say, Connie. I am like you in my love for music-related poetry. To me, music and poetry are fraternal twins; each able to shine independent of the other, but what glory when they join together artistically. Thank you for making my day with your kindness. Blessings ~ John

John, if you could play all those things and in beautiful voice sing you’d be wearing angel wings and what harmony you’d bring. Just love the poem written for your dear mother-in-law… Belle

Thank you so much Laura, your fave and uplifting words mean the world to me. These are truly instruments I would love to be able to make music with, but my muse took this in a direction of wishing I could soothe the hard year my mother-in-law is having. Blessings to you ~ John

I've always wished I had a talent for playing musical instruments (I tried to learn the flute in the fifth grade, let's just say it was not successful) Of these I think I would choose the violin, though I love the rhyme of gemstone and saxophone! Also love the use of 'euphonious' - so melodious :)

I tried the flute once, and was not successful at having anything remotely musical come out. I think when we discover for ourselves how difficult something is to master, we appreciate all the more those who have talent. Thank for your comment, Michelle (as you may have guessed, I also love the word 'euphonious')

Thank you for pointing out those lines, Grace. As I mentioned below, this was written for my ailing mother-in-law, and I wish I could assure her of God's presence on her difficult journey. She is a music lover, a remarkably talented singer in her younger days.

Lovely one, john. I really like the patterning effect. you are like me that way, always using interesting presentation and organization of your ideas. I looked up the sonnet you told me of. It was indeed a beauty and a new kind of sonnet I had not heard of before.

Thank you Andrea. I think you and I are both wired to love the patterns and cadence within poetry. I'm glad you liked the sonnet, thanks for paying a visit to her site.

I can hear the sweet sound in your verse John, I always think of those musicians who played till the end on the Titanic when I hear the violin. Tom

Tom, that was a very moving scene from the movie. To think that these musicians were committed to spending their last moments offering hope to the dying. Thanks for the kind words ~ John

Heidi, coming from a musician your comment means a lot to me. I have not given up hope to someday learn the sax, but the violin might just be over my musical head. Never say never, though! Thank you, my friend ~ John

Valsa, how true that music can calm the nerves of the weary or anxious soul. I wrote this for my mother-in-law who is 91 and has just been informed by her doctors that she has early onset of dementia. It is a very hard reality for her to embrace, and I wish I could do something to give her hope and assurance.
