I Wonder
I wonder if the snow that is falling
can feel the pace of my heart.
I wonder if the cruel wind that blows the cold air across my bare legs
can sense the fear in my mind.
Does the ground feel the frightened murmurs of the people,
as it does their feet, possibly walking to their doom?
Does the solider pointing the gun know my age,
or wonder my name?
And what will God do,
as he looks on?
The snow crunches under my feet,
and the people continue to walk in line,
forced by the soldiers.
The birds call to each other in the distance;
and I wonder if they know how lucky they are to fly.
Does anyone know what will happen next?
Mama, Papa, or the soldiers?
Does the wind know my fate? The snow, the air,
the clouds or the birds, all still free
to live as they please?
I wonder if the snow crunching under my feet
can feel the fear that trembles through me.
I wonder.
