“First I was afraid, I was petrified… I WILL SURVIVE” I can still hear those words going through my head… Cancer We don’t know how long you had been lurking But like a silent thief in the night you crept into our life Turning our whole world upside down So many questions Can it be cured? Will the cancer be eradicated forever? But no one can give a definite answer So many things to consider… As the side effects of any treatment can be so cruel But tough decisions would have to be made to save your life We could only hope and pray you were one of the lucky ones Before you went under the knife You said these words to me… I WILL SURVIVE Two and a half years later you remain cancer free Dedicated to my husband and anyone who can relate to these lines Unhinged Poetry Contest Sponsored by John Lawless Lyrics quoted from the song I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor 26~08~16

So many are forced on to that carousel and we are inadequate to do anything but love, support, learn and listen - not enough when you want to fix something. I know the emotion in your write is way too real, I feel that - I also hear your husband's words and believe I will continue to for awhile yet. So moving, Jan. God Bless all cancer victims, God bless them everyone ... (LOVE that song, it's a sing out loud and shake your boo-thing song) ... CayCay

Thanks Caycay - I was inspired to write for the contest but doubt it will float John's boat but I'm just happy to get my words out - sadly there will be many who can relate to what we went through:-( hugs Jan

A worthy tribute to a fighter and his second, in the corner with the towel and encouragement. Viv x

Jan, I'm happy for you and your husband. Like you say, so many don't survive. I lost my dad and my brother and it was devastating. A very inspiring write.

Thanks Daniel - we are one of the lucky ones but I wanted to portray a positive message with my poem:-) Its odd where we get our inspiration - I turned on the radio and the song was playing and the lines were so apt but hubby did say to me I will survive before his surgery ... here is the poem hugs Jan xx

Beautiful Jan, you always say I tackle hard topics but you do justice to issues close to your heart, and one can feel the words!

If it wasn't for his cancer I wouldn't be writing poetry ... I write from the heart with this poem - I'm not bothered about a contest placement I had to write what I felt :-) hugs Jan xx

I agree so much Ilene there really is a silver lining to my story. I'd never written a poem since my school days and If I am totally honest I really disliked poetry... guess its all changed since I wrote my first poem 'splendid isolation' and the rest is history:-) hugs Jan xx

A beautiful touching dedication Jan. I am especially moved by the "we" of your story. You faced it together and I am glad he is doing so well. Your love, support and humour no doubt a huge part in his triumphant defeat and continuing wellness...we are always stronger when we can unite as one..kinda like what you and many others do here at PS..bring people together.:-) Thank you...my best to you in the contest. blessings to all lynn p.s Great song:-)

Thanks Lynn - yes we faced it together every step of the way - without his cancer I would never have started writing:-) I was more scared when we thought he had cancer ... it took 2 years to actually find it so when it was diagnosed we were actually relieved - sounds strange but we knew it was lurking there it just wasn't easy to detect:-( hugs Jan xx

Those two lines of that song are very apt Tim ... a cancer diagnosis is a shock but you have to remain positive that is the key:-) hugs Jan xx
