I’m staring at the reflection in the mirror - who is the lady with the grey hair? Today a strange man came to visit me I do not recognise him … He says he is my son I try hard to remember as we talk about the past He shows me photographs of his childhood years Memories come back to me; I sob bleeding tears Dementia is robbing me, my recall is fading fast That man has now gone Saying he will visit soon Tears flow from my eyes Trapped in my own little world I sit sobbing silently Kimo and Tanka checked with how many syllables Challenge one write Contest Sponsored by Broken Wings 08~31~16

I nursed patients like this I even wrote a poem while on night duty but I don't think I will submit as I wouldn't want to upset anyone. Its a wonderfully true yet very sad situation as my daughter will find out as her husbands mum has just been diagnosed. My heart goes out to all family living with it.

It's heartbreaking for both the sufferer and the family - getting dementia is something I dread ever happening to me:-( hugs Jan xx

Jan this is sad but true. I know because we experience my mother-in-law's dementia when my wife and I visit. Your poem is right on the money.

Dementia is so scary; I like how you wrote form the sufferer's perspective. The second part is heartbreaking: not to recognize your own son! Good luck on the contest. Agnes

Yes, dementia is a sad state...but then in some ways it can be a blessing. Someone I know has it and he doesn't remember the bad things, only the good Good poem...very heartfelt.

My next door neighbour is only in her sixties...About a year ago dementia knocked on her door, and is taking her away from who she is to who she was very fast. When i see her i look deeply in her eyes trying to capture a glint of remembrance...For a moment I see a spark there..then it fades.to emptiness.I feel sad to see her this way because she used to be nurse with elderly..and now the support she gave others ..she needs it...I am touched by yr post dear Jan..because its real...Fave
