I Planted Hibiscus Today
I planted hibiscus today
My fingers joyed in the black soil again
Tenderly I touched my mother's dress
Saw her flesh like a new born child again
And sang to her loveliness
I planted hibiscus today
I planted hibiscus today
My origin was bare before my eyes
My lips were parched for breast
The suddenly I realized
God knelt like this, I am blessed
I planted hibiscus today
I planted hibiscus today
The tenderest part of broken stems
The fragile flesh of a shrub
Rootless now, no sign of the gems
The flowers hidden in the stub
I planted hibiscus today
I planted hibiscus today
Memories of mother, God and you
I trembled like a leaf then
The first time I kissed you Jew
And never was the same again
I planted hibiscus today
