I Could Only Smile

You asked me to kiss you, but I could only smile I’m not ready for what that kiss might mean I need to stay where I am awhile With you, I share my secrets, once for someone else But I still can’t give you all of me Because my heart’s still on his shelf You asked me if I loved you, but I could only smile There’s so much caring in my eyes But love… no, that’s not my style With you, I show compassion, caring and concern But my past has taught me about love And it’s a lesson well I’ve learned You asked me for forever, but I could only laugh Today we are together I can’t think much more beyond that With you, I spend my moments, precious little time And treasure every one of them When I’m with you, I leave the past behind So you just smile and say you understand You just laugh and reach out for my hand And tell me everything will change Promise me my life will be rearranged Believe that nothing stays the same… With you, it never is, and never will be quite the same Because I will not relive with you The past that has brought me all this pain You asked if you could kiss me, and this time There was no smile I just closed my eyes and drifted, and felt your lips on mine Still, I’m not ready for what that kiss might mean Just a kiss… that could mean nothing or mean everything So when I heard you say, “I love you” I could only smile…
