How We Elect the President
Senate and House of Representatives
By Franklin Price
3/20/2019
A Representative Republic
Is what we're supposed to be
We are one from fifty states
For all the world to see
Our Constitution has the guidelines
Our founding fathers thoughts are there
It sets the base for who we are
We all should read it, if we care.
Three Branches were determined
To check and balance one and all
The Legislative, the Executive,
Judicial for the judgment call
The Legislative makes the rules
To determine how we go
Made of the House and Senate
Called the Congress, for the show
The House of Representatives
By Federal Census count is done
Mostly populated States, the most,
All States, at least, have one
Representatives by district
Voters send to Washington
To represent constituents
Every two years they must run
Put there by the people
Should work so the people see
That they're not there for the party
Or their own celebrity
The Senate's term is six years
Every State has two
They represent the State they're from
And all its people too
Only one third ,of the Senate,
Are elected with each House
With staggered terms of six years
Have much longer to espouse
Neither house of Congress
Has any limits to their terms
If the people don't like what they see
The may vote out any worms
The Executive branch of government
Of which the President is head
Is the elected branch for everyone
The whole country is its stead
We elect the president
The Electoral College way
Our founding fathers made it up
So we can argue it today
When the people vote for President
And all counts are said and done,
The Electoral College chosen
For the last and final ones
Each State has as many votes
As elected in the Congress land
To allow each State to have a voice
Whether it be small or grand
Each State has it's guidelines
Of how the College vote is done
Doesn't have to agree with other States
Sent to the hill to end the run
Each State's votes are opened
In front of the House and Senate
When opening each envelope
It's announced results within it
When all envelopes are opened
And the count is said and done
The person with majority
Is the Presidential one
This way each State has had its say
For the people there within
May not agree with the national vote
Where a few states control the win
The President's elected
Every four years nationwide
They bring along their chosen vice
(No pun intended) by their side
The President may run again
But may do it only once
Doesn't matter if a genius
Or a foolish, flailing dunce
Presidents are the executives
Looking out for all the land
They guide us to our future
Decide on each and every stand
The Supreme Court is appointed
By the president's decree
With approval of the Senate
When there becomes a vacancy
The only branch that's not elected
And they're appointed there for life
They're there until they die or quit
Which has always caused some strife
I've covered all the branches
Of our governmental tree
If you don't like the way it works
Work for what you'd like to see
